Include a cafe

A cafe with outside seating and an outside entrance would add value to the surrounding area.

Improve or relocate Archives

The Archives Department has not only outgrown its current space, the space also lacks adequate preservation protection.

Charging stations

The library needs to have charging stations like major airports. Nearly everyone looks for a place to charge cell phones. A dedicated laptop area would be helpful also. Wandering all over the building to find outlets near seating is inconvenient.

Increase gallery space

Gallery space for the library's special collections is needed. Also additional space for community exhibits would be great.

Develop a local history & reading area

With a focus both on BIrmingham's and the state's history. Have this highlighted in the library's directory and on the website so that teachers, interested readers and newcomers can find it quickly and easily. Include both books, audio/visual materials and art.

Innovation Lab Makerspace

Let's have a space for the public with cutting edge technology such as 3D printers and laser cutters. It would be an area like Chicago Public Library's maker space--"a version of a hackerspace or makerspace, a community-operated workspace where people with common interests, often in technology and science, come together to learn and collaborate."

Glass Studio Box

The inclusion of glass walled studio space for hands-on workshops/programming, artists/designers/filmmakers in residence, and large eye catching pieces and graphics for library programming or for gallery exhibits. The space should be highly visible from the street as well as from within the library.

Create reading nooks/areas

Develop quiet reading areas away from the traffic and fray. Use the building’s architecture and library shelving to create a sense of enclosure. Place near windows for natural daylight or include natural daylight-effect bulbs in the area.
